Hi, I'm Nick Cavanagh, a school's portrait photographer working within the beautiful counties of Cork and Kerry here in Ireland. I'd like to take a minute or two to chat through how Parents can make the most of 'Photo Day' .
1. The Alternate Years Problem.
In Ireland, a lot of schools organise School photo day every two years. There's a lot to be said for this, but there are a couple of things as a parent you need to be aware of. First up, if your child starts Junior Infants in an 'off' year then you might be at risk of missing an all important image as they begin their journey.
Definitely make sure you take a picture them on Day One yourselves.
If you position them outside in the shade on Day 1 your phone camera should do a great job for sure.
Secondly.. If you have children at different ages, you might want to get a Sibling picture of them (imagine you've three - maybe in Juniors First and Sixth classes)- This will be the only year they are all at school together and It might be that the only year this is possible is in an 'off year'.
If that picture is important to you and it's not happening at school. Don't worry you'd be more than welcome to visit our Kenmare Studio.
2. Don't pressure your child: Telling them to smile for the camera as you drive in rarely works! Bribery also... It's going to cost you a lot in Oreo's over the years if your child expects one every time you get the camera out. There's usually a lot of energy in the room as the children queue up and this is usually enough to create a great portrait.
3. Cherish the Candid Moments: One our absolute favourite child portraits can be seen featured the big window of our studio. The boy was so excited he couldn't contain himself and just as the shutter was pressed he broke from the standard pose and showed his true happy self.
4. Displaying Your Photo: Whilst your mobile phone will be full of images of your children, there is nothing that compares to a print hanging on a wall. It's one of the reasons that we are committed to printed photographs that will retain quality for many generations. The image hanging on the wall will last so much longer than the phone in your pocket!
As your dedicated schools photographer in Cork and Kerry, I'm committed to creating an experience that goes beyond the click of the camera. Let's celebrate the joy and growth of your child's academic journey through the lens of unforgettable school portraits. I'd love to visit new schools and chat through the straightforward process of photo day. Whether your school is small or large, the size doesn't matter. We're now booking schools for the two remaining terms of 2024. Feel free to contact us, and let's create lasting memories together.
